Squamish First Nations Protocol Agreement

PROTOCOL AGREEMENT

The desire of both Nations to cooperate with each other in order to take advantage of economic opportunities, establish a clear First Nation presence in our traditional territory, and protect our respective Aboriginal rights and title, was formalized in a historic agreement.

In March 2001 our Protocol Agreement was signed to establish a process that allows the Squamish peoples and Lil'wat peoples to:

  • Identify issues of mutual concern within traditional territory
  • Better take advantage of economic opportunities
  • Make decisions jointly and implement those decisions together
  • Allow both Nations to express our mutual respect for one another’s historic presence in the region and to obtain a better understanding of our respective communities
  • Establish a basis of mutual support for the preservation and protection of both Nations’ Aboriginal Rights, and to examine the possibilities of shared jurisdiction and co-management
