The Squamish Nation and the Lil'wat Nation have continued to co-exist respectfully as neighbors and, in 2001, signed a historic Protocol Agreement committing to continue cooperation in matters of cultural and economic development, and co-management of shared territory. The only one of its kind in Canada, this agreement affirms our Nations’ shared heritage and profound desire to continue to live and work together harmoniously.
The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre and Community Society (Squamish Lil'wat Society) is a not-for-profit registered charitable society created in 2002 to operate the jointly owned Skwxwú7mesh Lil'wat7ul Cultural Centre, a world-class facility in Whistler, BC. The Society manages the development of the project, together with a steering committee comprised of Squamish Nation and Lil'wat Nation representatives, our federal and provincial government partners, and a team of technical advisors.
